Our Story: The Making of Seniors in Motion

Michael Williams, Registered Physiotherapist and Co-Owner of Trent Health in Motion, initiated the Seniors in Motion program in 2019 as a meaningful contribution towards promoting healthy aging in the community. The initiative was sparked by a collaboration with Curve Lake First Nation, providing an exercise and health education program to local indigenous seniors. The positive feedback from these early efforts cemented the founding principles of Seniors in Motion: to empower seniors through evidence-based health education and foster social connections.

The COVID-19 pandemic, despite posing challenges, highlighted the pressing need for such initiatives. It underscored issues faced by seniors like inactivity, deconditioning, and social isolation. In response, Seniors in Motion intensified its focus on small group sizes and post-session socializing opportunities. The journey so far, although challenging at times, has been rewarding, shaping Seniors In Motion into a comprehensive health program serving seniors in Peterborough and surrounding areas.

Empowering Seniors to Embrace Active Aging

The Seniors in Motion program goes beyond the provision of health services. We are committed to empowering seniors with the knowledge and skills necessary for healthy aging. We believe that every senior deserves the opportunity to lead a fulfilling, active, and independent life, regardless of their physical condition or financial circumstances.

Our programs are designed to equip seniors with practical strategies to manage age-related health conditions, improve physical strength and flexibility, and enhance overall well-being. We focus on key aspects of aging, from exercise and nutrition to managing specific health conditions like arthritis.

We also recognize the importance of social connection in promoting overall well-being. Therefore, we foster a sense of community among our participants, providing opportunities for social interaction and mutual support. By prioritizing evidence-based decision-making and accessibility, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of seniors in our community, supporting them in their journey towards healthy aging.
